How to Use the 5-Letter Word Solver
- If you already know a letter's exact position, type it into that position box under Correct Position.
- If you know a letter is in the word but not exactly where, add it under Letter Is In The Word - tap any positions it definitely isn't in, then click Add.
- Type any letters you know are not in the word at all under Excluded Letters.
- Click Find Words to instantly see every matching five-letter word, sorted into Best Matches and All Matches.
How Green, Yellow and Grey Clues Work
These three clue types mirror the feedback used by popular Wordle-style word puzzles. Correct Position means a letter is definitely in that exact position. Letter Is In The Word means a letter is definitely present somewhere in the answer, just not in whichever position(s) you have marked as prohibited for it. Excluded Letters means a letter does not appear anywhere in the answer at all - so entering the same letter under Correct Position or Letter Is In The Word and also under Excluded Letters describes a conflicting pair of clues, and the solver will tell you so rather than guessing which one you meant.
Repeated letters are still handled correctly wherever this interface can express them: for example, marking a letter as Correct Position in one box and also adding it under Letter Is In The Word (for a different position) correctly tells the solver the answer contains at least two of that letter.
Tips for Finding Five-Letter Words
- Enter every clue you have, even partial ones - each additional clue narrows the results further.
- Watch for repeated letters - a letter can be confirmed via Correct Position in one box while also being added under Letter Is In The Word to indicate a second occurrence elsewhere in the word.
- Start with Best Matches for the most likely everyday words, then check All Matches if you need a broader list.
Strategies for Narrowing Possible Answers
When a large number of words still match your clues, look at the results for common vowel and consonant patterns you haven't tried yet - guessing a word that tests several untried letters at once is often more useful than guessing a word you already suspect is correct, since it reveals more new information either way.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the DONToolbox 5-Letter Word Solver free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no registration and no limit on how many searches you can run.
Is this tool affiliated with Wordle?
No. This is an original DONToolbox tool, useful alongside Wordle-style word games, but not affiliated with, or endorsed by, Wordle or its owner.
How does the solver handle repeated letters?
Correctly. Correct Position and Letter Is In The Word can be combined for the same letter to require more than one occurrence of it in the answer. Excluded Letters always means the letter does not appear at all, so entering a letter there that is also required elsewhere is treated as a conflicting clue rather than being silently allowed.
What is the difference between Best Matches and All Matches?
Best Matches favours familiar, everyday words. All Matches includes the full, broader dictionary of valid five-letter words.
What happens if I enter conflicting clues?
The solver detects the conflict and shows a clear message explaining what to check, rather than silently returning an empty or incorrect result.
Is my entered information uploaded or stored?
No. Every search runs directly in your own browser. Nothing you type is ever uploaded, sent to a server, or stored anywhere.
Does the solver work on mobile?
Yes. It works on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices, with large, touch-friendly controls.
