What Duplicate Line Removal Is Useful For

Any time you end up with a list that has repeated entries - often after combining several lists together, or exporting data from somewhere that includes the same value more than once - removing duplicates gets you back to a clean, unique list without manually scanning line by line. It keeps the first occurrence of each line and its original position, so the order you started with is preserved rather than being rearranged.

Common Use Cases

  • Cleaning up an email list or contact list built up from several sources.
  • Tidying a combined to-do list or set of notes where the same item was added more than once.
  • Removing repeated lines from log output or exported data before reviewing it.
  • Merging two versions of a list without ending up with the same entries twice.

What the Options Do

Ignore Case treats lines that only differ by capitalisation as duplicates of each other, keeping the first one exactly as it was typed. Trim Spaces removes leading and trailing spaces before comparing lines, and also trims the visible output, so inconsistent spacing does not stop two otherwise-identical lines from being recognised as duplicates. Remove Empty Lines strips blank lines out of the result entirely; when it is switched off, blank lines are never treated as duplicates of one another and are all preserved exactly as they appeared in your original text.

Practical Tips

  • If your list was typed by hand, turn Trim Spaces on - accidental extra spaces are a common reason near-identical lines are not recognised as duplicates.
  • Turn Ignore Case on when working with names or entries that may have been typed inconsistently, such as "Apple" and "apple".
  • Leave Remove Empty Lines off if blank lines are being used deliberately to separate sections of your text.
  • Check the Duplicates Removed statistic after processing to confirm the result matches what you expected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the tool sort my list alphabetically?

No. The original order is always preserved - only the first occurrence of each duplicate line is kept, in its original position.

Are blank lines treated as duplicates of each other?

No, never. Remove Empty Lines is the only setting that affects blank lines - when it is off, every blank line in your original text is kept.

Will Trim Spaces change my kept lines, or only the comparison?

Both. When enabled, leading and trailing spaces are removed from the lines you keep as well as being ignored during comparison.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Processing happens entirely in your browser, and your text is never stored by DONToolbox.

Is the Duplicate Line Remover free to use?

Yes, completely free, with no account or sign-up required.
